Promotion of Safe Agri-inputs
Sensotech recently entered into a collaborative agreement with HJA Africa Limited, Ghana, to test and promote an organic bio-stimulant with pest-repellent characteristics known as “Organic Farming Aid (OFA)” in Kenya and eastern Africa region. The OFA product is currently undergoing on-station efficacy trials at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) experimental farm and Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Kiboko Station. The product will be a welcome substitute for synthetic agri-inputs that have been implicated in adverse environmental and human health consequences.
Sensotech promotes agribusiness development through value-added processing of silver cyprinid or dagaa (Rastrineobola argentea) fish (blue economy) and sugar confectionery (jaggery) products for sale in local supermarket outlets. The firm is working with informal women enterprise groups in process development, establishment of quality assurance protocols like HACCP, packaging, and marketing of the processed products.
Capacity Development in Food Product Development & Sensory Evaluation
The company engages in the training of food and pharmaceutical industry personnel on the use of sensory evaluation techniques in new product development, process improvements, and the establishment of quality assurance procedures. This constituted the primary engagement in the formative years of Sensotech. We have worked with some of the largest food and pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in Kenya such as Unilever Kenya Limited, Unga Limited, Coca Cola Africa Limited, GlaxoSmithKline – Kenya, Brookside Dairy Limited, and Kenya Breweries Limited.
Food Security and Nutrition Policy Analysis
The attainment of food security and nutrition in African countries depends on appropriately designed policies and frameworks that are effectively coordinated and implemented. Sensotech consultants have worked with RUFORUM and FAO to review the current status, policies and institutional environment for food security and nutrition in Kenya as a benchmark to monitor and track progress with regard to development initiatives in this space. This was in response to a recommendation by the high-level advocacy platform dubbed the Eastern Africa Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (EAPA-FSN)
Evaluation of Agricultural Development Projects
Sensotech has a network of dedicated and experienced professionals across Africa that have been called upon to review and evaluate various agricultural development projects. A recent assignment was conducted for AGRA on “A Study of the Impact of AGRA Trained Personnel on the African Agricultural Landscape and Capacity Gap Assessment of African Agricultural Personnel.” The assignment was conducted in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Sensotech is currently exploring partnerships with foreign international business matchmaking firms to promote business idea generation, prototyping and promotion of business start-ups from the prototypes in Kenya.
Agricultural Innovation Systems
The major challenges to Africa’s agriculture including low productivity, lack of competitiveness, degradation of natural capital, adverse effects of climate change, huge loses along the value chain, low nutritional quality, and food safety can only can only be surmounted through innovation. A systems perspective to innovation recognizes that all value chain actors can potentially contribute to knowledge co-creation in order to spur much-needed innovations.
Agricultural development programming by governments and development partners need to embrace agricultural innovation system (AIS) concepts, allowing markets to determine research and development priorities and greater participation by the private sector. High performing AIS are key to achieving sustainable agricultural productivity growth and rural incomes. Therefore, AIS perspectives need to be embraced whether in research, extension, or capacity development.
Sensotech is committed to working with various agencies and organizations across Africa to promote and strengthen AIS at national, sub-regional and regional levels.
Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E)
Monitoring &Evaluation (M&E) consultancy is essential for organizations that want to improve the effectiveness and impact of their programs and demonstrate accountability to stakeholders. It helps organizations to identify what works, what does not work, and what needs to be improved. Sensotech undertakes M&E consultancies, which involves working with organizations to assess the effectiveness and impact of their programs, policies, or interventions. We can provide expert guidance, advice, and support to organizations in designing, implementing, and managing M&E systems to improve program performance, inform decision-making, and demonstrate accountability to stakeholders.
